David Maria Turoldo

David Maria Turoldo (1916-1992), ‘restless conscience of the Church’, was one of the prime makers of the change in Catholicism. Ninth of ten children, at the age of thirteen he entered the monastery, not dissimilar to another great religious man, St. Francis of Paola (1416-1507) of whom we’ll celebrate the 600th birth anniversary. In other times and conditions, even this saint chose a life among the ‘last’. Hermit and miracle worker, he founded the Ordine dei Minimi and his life was one of wonder since the moment he saw the light.

Padre Davide Maria Turoldo (1916-1992), ‘coscienza inquieta della Chiesa’, fu uno degli artefici del cambiamento nel Cattolicesimo. Nono di dieci fratelli, a soli tredici anni entrò in convento non dissimilmente da un altro grande religioso di cui si celebrano i 600 anni dalla nascita: San Francesco da Paola (1416-1507). In altri tempi e condizioni, il santo scelse pure un’esistenza vicino agli ‘ultimi’. Eremita e taumaturgo, fondò l’Ordine dei Minimi e la sua vita fu uno stupore sin dal momento in cui vide la luce.

The image of the Adoration of the Sheperds above celebrates the 400th birth anniversary of the Neapolitan painter Bernardo Cavallino (1616-1656). Original and indipendent, he was distinguished for his use of bright light, mitigated by golden colours, that softens the melancholy of his transfigurations. A veil of thoughtful melancholy permeates also the work of the sculptor Luigi Minisini (1816-1901), who lived two hundred years after Cavallino. Harmonious and refined, he was ‘the last of the classicists and the first of the realists’.

L’immagine del Natale celebra invece il pittore napoletano Bernardo Cavallino (1616-1656) nei 400 anni dalla sua nascita. Originale e indipendente, si distinse per l’acceso luminismo, attenuato da cromatismi dorati che addolciscono la malinconia delle sue trasfigurazioni. Un velo di pensosa malinconia permea anche l’opera di Luigi Minisini (1816-1901), lo scultore friulano che visse duecento anni dopo di lui.
Armonico e raffinato, fu ‘l’ultimo dei canoviani e primo dei realisti’.

Harmony characterizes also three major European personalities born 300 years ago: Nicolò Pacassi (1716-1790), Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown (1716-1783) and Thomas Gray (1716-1771). The first, architect at the court of Maria Theresa of Austria, had the faculty of adapting his buildings to the landscape, balancing the volumes.

L’armonia caratterizza pure tre grandi personalità europee di cui si celebrano i 300 anni dalla nascita: Nicolò Pacassi (1716-1790), Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown (1716-1783) e Thomas Gray (1716-1771). Il primo, architetto di corte di Maria Teresa d’Austria, ebbe la capacità di adeguare i progetti al paesaggio, equilibrandone i volumi.

Capability Brown was a landscape architect, brilliant in recognizing the potentials of a scenery, balancing each element. Finally, we mention the English poet Thomas Gray, the author of the Elegy, who was among the first who gave voice to those who still had not had one.

Lancelot Brown, geniale architetto di paesaggio, seppe individuarne le potenzialità, dando il giusto equilibrio a ciascun elemento. Infine, l’autore dell’Elegia, il poeta Thomas Gray, fu tra i primi a dar voce a chi ancora non ne aveva avuta.
